International Students Weigh in on Visa Issues

Abstract:
For EC students, recruiting and the associated stress of deciding on where to go after graduation is just on the horizon. To make the epic decision on which job to accept, many HBS students will weigh compensation, lifestyle, and location. For some international students who wish to stay in the US, visa issues are also an important factor....

1. Every foreign student signs an attestation that he/she is coming to the U.S. *ONLY* to study and that he/she will return home at the completion of those studies.

2. H-1B visas are for "specialty occupations" not for "highly skilled" workers (as in an O visa).

3. The visa quota is the same for FY 2006 as it was for FY 2004 and 2005.

4. Hundreds of H-1B visas were approved for people without the equivalent of a US high school diploma in each recent year for which data are available.

Bill: I myself am an International student and I dont remember any such kind of attestation. Also, would you please define "highly skilled" and "speciality occupations".

Bruce: I completly agree with your comment, but I'm not sure how those people get by cuz I was pretty sure that a bachelors degree or relevant experience is required. Do you have access to that data? Would you mind sending me a link to it?

Oh, Bill and Bruce, looks so easy to point the finger. Right? What if they are working while they are studying? They are working for US, in US... I see nothing wrong with it. Plus, we should stop being so proud about our American origins. Let's remember that almost 60% of those working in big companies in US are foreign. Microsoft is a great example: 80% of those working there are foreign.

I think working for US is not the problem. International students work hard to bear their expenses at the same time help the country grow economically.
