As you all know, the topic of gender at HBS has recently come under the spotlight after the NY Times article. As Co-Presidents of the HBS Women's Student Association, we wanted to briefly comment on some of the issues raised. Many organizations face challenges with gender equality, and HBS is no exception. What is special about HBS is that our leaders and students are thinking creatively about fostering gender equality and are dedicating time and resources to making positive changes. As with any pioneering effort, there is the potential for missteps along the road, but we believe it is important not to accept the status quo simply to avoid the potential for discomfort or future missteps. We are excited to be at HBS during a time when the culture is being examined and are honored to be a part of constructive changes resulting from that assessment. The process of examining and constantly improving student culture on campus cannot occur without thoughtful feedback from students. With that in mind, the WSA is launching a new Culture at HBS Lunch Series with Professor Youngme Moon to offer an opportunity for students to respond to recent press coverage and discuss thoughts on campus culture in general. The first lunch discussion will take place 12-1pm on October 2nd, with 10 EC spots available by lottery. Additional lunches for the series will be scheduled as long as student demand exists. Both men and women ECs are encouraged to enter the lottery for the October 2nd lunch and express interest in future lunches by filling out this poll: https://secure.hbs.edu/poll/taker/pollTaker.jsp?poll=134427. As always, we encourage the healthy and constructive dialogue around gender on campus, and please let us know if you have questions about this event or thoughts on any other topic.
