Seth Klarman, President and CEO, The Baupost Group, (HBS ’82)
Seth A. Klarman. Mr. Klarman is the President and CEO of The Baupost Group, L.L.C., which currently manages approximately $27 billion on behalf of individual and institutional clients. He has had primary responsibility for managing the investments of Baupost since the Company was formed in May, 1982. Baupost uses a value discipline with an event-driven bias to find global opportunities in such diverse areas as publicly-traded and private equities, bankrupt and financially-distressed debt, and real estate.
Author of Margin of Safety, a book that outlines his value investment philosophy, Mr. Klarman was chosen as lead editor for Security Analysis: Sixth Edition, published in 2008, and has been featured in a variety of investment industry publications. He is a 1982 graduate of Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar, and received his Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in Economics from Cornell University in 1979.
Mr. Klarman is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Facing History and Ourselves, a teacher training organization, and Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees for The David Project. He is also a member of the Board of Dean’s Advisors at HBS, where he has been a senior lecturer on value investing, and was a 2011 recipient of the school’s Alumni Achievement Award. Mr. Klarman is on the Board of Directors of both the Broad Institute and The Israel Project, and he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Executive Committee of AIPAC. He is also Vice Chair of Beth Israel Hospital’s Board of Managers and a member of their Board of Trustees. Mr. Klarman is Chairman of The Klarman Family Foundation.
Dan Loeb, Founder and CEO, Third Point
Daniel Loeb founded Third Point LLC in 1995 and leads portfolio management, risk management and research activities.
Before founding Third Point, Daniel Loeb worked on both the buy and the sell sides for over a decade, gaining dedicated experience in distressed debt, high-yield bond sales, risk arbitrage and private investments. Immediately before starting Third Point, he was Vice-President of high-yield bond sales at Citigroup.
Previously, Daniel Loeb was a Senior Vice-President in the distressed debt department at Jefferies & Co., where he worked as a bankruptcy analyst, bank loan trader and distressed securities salesman. Before Jefferies, Daniel was a risk arbitrage Analyst at Lafer Equity Investors. He began his career as an Associate in private equity at Warburg Pincus.
Dan Loeb is a Trustee of the United States Olympic Committee, Mt. Sinai Hospital, the Manhattan Institute, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. He is a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Enterprise Institute’s National Council. Daniel Loeb is also the Chairman of the Board of Success Academies Charter Schools. Since 2004, he has been a Trustee of Prep for Prep, a NYC organization that prepares underprivileged children to attend competitive independent schools. Last year, Dan Loeb launched a new initiative with Paul Singer and the Human Rights Campaign, America’s largest LGBT civil rights organization, designed to protect LGBT rights globally in the face of increasing discrimination.
Daniel Loeb graduated from Columbia University with an A.B. in economics in 1983. He has endowed the Daniel S. Loeb Scholarship for undergraduate study there and received Columbia’s John Jay Award for distinguished professional achievement.
Mark McGoldrick, Co-founder and CEO, Mount Kellett
Mr. McGoldrick is Co-Founder and Global Chief Investment Officer of Mount Kellett, based in New York. Prior to forming Mount Kellett, Mr. McGoldrick was a partner at Goldman Sachs, and the Co-Founder/Head of the Global Special Situations Group (GSSG). In this capacity, Mr. McGoldrick was responsible for creating, building-out and investing capital for the Asian Special Situations Group (ASSG), the European Special Situations Group (ESSG) and the Americas Special Situations Group (AMSSG) (collectively, "GSSG").
Mr. McGoldrick also ran the Goldman Sachs Whitehall Real Estate Fund in Asia. During his tenure at Goldman Sachs, Mr. McGoldrick was a member of the Firmwide Risk Committee, Goldman Sachs Partnership Committee, Asian Management and Operating Committee, European Management and Operating Committee, Fixed Income and Equities Operating Committee, Fixed Income and Equities Executive Committee, various GSSG Investment Committees and the Specialty Lending Group Capital Committee. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Mr. McGoldrick held positions at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce / Wood Gundy. Mr. McGoldrick holds a BA from Bowdoin College and an MS from Columbia University.
