Introverts unite! You’re probably already being bombarded with advertising for a couple of weeks’ worth of awesome parties. For some, that sounds awesome. For others, it is no doubt pretty daunting. If you’re more of an introvert, you may not be super psyched about spending all day surrounded by people in class, and all night surrounded by people in a club. It might feel like you’re the only one who feels that way. We guarantee you you’re not. It’s not the case that everyone at HBS - except you - is a non-stop party animal. If you’re honest about how you want to spend your social time, you’ll find other people who’d also prefer to grab a quiet dinner instead of hitting another party. But if no one who feels that way speaks up, there will be a lot of people feeling awkward at parties!
Defend your priorities Everyone is at HBS for different reasons, and arrives at different points in their life. There is no one ‘right’ way to live this experience. But if you know the right way for you, don’t be afraid to priortize it. It’s fine to skip a party to hang out with your partner. It’s okay to leave early to practice your cello. It’s alright to spend more time than other people preparing cases if you really want to nail finance. And it’s fine to prioritize partying and making friends over reading every last exhibit on every last case... You’re going to be bombarded with choices and distractions. Don’t just passively react to them. Proactively shape the life and experience you want while you’re here.
Join and contribute to communities Your section will be the foundation of your RC year. You will have a great time with them. But it’s also a great idea to find and be part of communities of like-minded people. This might be the rugby team, the Social Enterprise Club, or even other entrepreneurial folks. It’s a great way to broaden your experience, to learn, and to make great friends.
Get involved with The Harbus!Student media is fun. We can write about serious things, we can report on important news - but at the end of the day we’re not professional journalists, so the focus is on having fun. Our passion is showcasing the diverse opinions and interests of the HBS community. If you have something you want to get off your chest, we’d love to publish it. If you want to show thought leadership in an industry you’re trying to break into, we’d love to publish your thoughts. If you’re an illustrator, photographer or poet, we’d love to showcase your work. If you want to know more, reach out to Steve (steve@harbus.org), or drop by our office in the Gallatin basement. Have a great year! Steve, Brandon, Seongmin & Ange.
